The crisp and sunny Spring wedding of Helen & Mark at the pretty Widford St Marys church & Houchins wedding venue in Essex – Stephanie Fairweather, wedding photographer in Essex & the UK

I very much enjoyed the early Spring wedding of Helen & Mark. First for its people – friendly and loving, second for its atmosphere of the day – relaxed and fun.

Helen and her girls got ready at the beautiful Houchins venue on the morning of the wedding until being picked up by her father in a vintage Daimler car who drove them both to the pretty St Mary church in Chelmsford. Following the ceremony all guests enjoyed drinks on the church gardens before travelling back to Houchins for the rest of the festivities. Helen and Mark’s venue decor was inspired by their love of travel and most of the DIY decorations were the results of love for attention to details.

I thoroughly enjoyed this day – mostly because Helen & Mark are an incredibly friendly bunch. But the added surprise  for me was when I was asked a few weeks later to do this all over again for the wedding of Helen’s little sister who has now booked me for next summer – its got to be the best feedback ever!.. And as the groom is ‘francais’, there’ll be mixed conversing in both languages so Vickie (my dear assistant), you’d better brush up on your French as I’ll be testing you next month.

Wishing Helen & Mark an amazing life together x

New to Parenthood? Here’s a great activity for mum/dad & baby special time – Fairweather Photography attend Basking Babies Massage classes

Baby Massage, wish I knew about this class when my ones were little.

I did baby gym and joined various mother & twins clubs. It is important to do activities to bond with your baby but it is also great to find ways to socialise with other mums and be able to share concerns, tips and milestones. I would have joined the Basking Babies course for sure.

I first met Carla when her first born was little. She invited me to take some pictures of her class in action for her website and we combined with mini shoots for the mums and babies present that day. It seemed ideal to offer this easy photoshoot option to mums who were already there for their massage with baby.

Since then I’ve had the pleasure of meeting plenty more parents & babies. I am pleased to have seen many of my images being offered as Christmas, Mother’s Day & Father’s Day gifts. I’ve even been told that ‘there’s almost too many beautiful images for grandparents to choose just the one’.  I am now regularly attending many of the rapidly expanding Basking Babies classes offering mini photo sessions after the massage. I feel very privileged to get to meet so many parents – especially when trusted to take beautiful images of their new bundle of joy.

Whether you are an expectant mother, a new mom, a second time round mum… or just can’t resist images of squishy baby rolls, here is a small selection of pictures of the classes in action and a few sample mugshots of the minis! 🙂

A relaxed ‘at home’ newborn and family photoshoot in Billericay, Essex – Stéphanie Fairweather – Family Photographer covering Essex, Suffolk, Cambridge, Hertfordhshire & London

I still remember the first weeks with my little ones. It was an achievement to get to the twin gathering at 11am despite my 2 being up at 5am. Part breastfeeding, part bottle feeding, I had a lot to take with me on top of my 2 babies, the double buggy & the car seats. And this isn’t just a twin thing, you need an awful lot of stuff to go out with a baby. I feel exhausted just thinking about it. I am really pleased that I took so many pictures of them growing up because it is true, time does fly by and you do forget how little your not-so-little-anymore-ones were. I am a little sad however that I didn’t take more newborn pics – snapping away was the last thing on my mind the first couple of weeks – OK 6 months really -…. My mind was either on overdrive or asleep.

So let’s face it, very few of us will fancy (forget fancy – manage even) leaving the house early morning with a 1 week old baby and a young child to go for family photoshoot in the studio. Yet it would so lovely to capture your first weeks getting to know your new bundle of joy and get family pics whilst dad is on paternity leave too.

  • At home photoshoots are becoming more popular exactly for that reason because it allows parents to be in their own environment with everything on hand. But it also offers a documentary styled photography that is liked by many because it is un-posed and therefore natural.

I met Trisha a few years ago when her first born was little, I took pictures of the little man then. I was delighted to be invited over to their home recently to photograph the newest arrival, gorgeous Nyla. Big brother Zayden was attentative towards his sister and was very compliant with me, although unsure when I first walked in, he quickly warmed up to the idea of the shoot after a chat about his favourite cartoon characters.

Below is a selection of images taken on the day. A pleasure photographing this relaxed and friendly family – Thank you for having me guys! Stéphanie x

The Autumn wedding of Hannah & Joe at Houchins, Essex – Stéphanie Fairweather, Wedding Photographer in Essex, Suffolk, Hertfordshire, Cambridge, London & the UK

I first met Hannah at a Basking Babies massage class when I took pictures of her little boy Theo aged only a few months old then. I was therefore delighted when they contacted me again to ask to photograph their Autumn wedding. I arranged to meet them both in their home for a consultation meeting a year before their big day and I instantly like Joe too.

Contrary to what a few others may think, meeting the couple beforehand is important as it allows the photographer to explain how he/she works and what insurances and plan B he/she has in place whilst answering any questions that may arise during the conversation. It is the opportunity to put the couples mind at rest and help them make an informed decision. Most importantly you all get ‘a feel’ of each other.

After arranging an engagement/family shoot in Chelmsford prior to the wedding (it was high paced, Theo does run fast…), the next time I met with Hannah again was on the wedding day. The event took place in one of my favourite wedding venues – Houchins. After photographing the bridal preps and getting to know the friendly girl bridal party, I spent a little time with the lads getting some of the images they had specifically requested in their ‘must have pics’ list.

The rest of the day went smoothly and pretty quick too, it always does – Couples are always surprised of how fast their long awaited day goes by. As for me I absolutely loved Hannah and Joe’s families. Friendly wedding guests, loving couple, happy kiddos, minimal rainfall – a recipe for success, most definitely. Enjoy looking through a small selection of Hannah & Joe’s special day and wishing them both again many years of happiness. Thank you for choosing me. Stephanie x

Why are at home shoots appealing to families – Example of a relaxed & fun At home family shoot – by Stephanie, Essex & Suffolk Family Photographer –

Opting for a studio or an outdoor shoot is a personal preference.

Both present advantages and there are times when one wins over the other. I think it’s always great to mix both. Studio shoots can capture beautiful clean and clutter free portraits of your child, focusing on his and her looks at a certain time in his/her life. Outdoors shoots are weather dependant yet they are versatile and often easier to arrange.

  • At home shoots are becoming popular and appealing to parents with young children.

Beside the advantage of not having to get your family ready and on time to an agreed location with your photographer, at home shoots offer an environment that is familiar to the little ones. All is on hand whether it’d be change of clothes or extra snacks. All toys are on site and within reach. Photographing a daily routine such as cooking or playing in the garden is relaxing, easy to set up and children will be more likely ready to cooperate. Plus it is always nice to get images of your own home, your child’s bedroom or a favourite playroom maybe.

This sweet & short 1 min video below is showing you the outcome of this fun photography session with 2 rather lovely kiddos, their pretty cool mum and a chilled pug called Marley. Located in Suffolk, their home offered lovely settings from the playroom to the lounge finishing with the garden with ample space allowing the children to run freely. Children – you did great! x

Why I always work with an assistant at weddings (Essex Wedding Photographer – Stéphanie Fairweather)

Choosing the right photographer for your wedding is essential.

In the ‘Investment’ section of my website you will find a word on the importance of hiring a professional photographer over a friend with a camera. Amongst the must have of insurance, experience & equipment maintenance, most professional wedding photographers will often work with an assistant.

I do – I wouldn’t do it any other way and these are all the reasons why:

Why I always work with an assistant at weddings:

  • She carries my equipment and moves it to the required spot when needed leaving me hands free with the one camera and also allows me to be a lot more mobile
  • She facilitates lens swaps giving me the chance to work much faster in between frames
  • She gathers guests for the group photos, hunts the missing one who disappeared to the toilet or the bar, prepares the next groups and reminds me of all the timings… phew!
  • She ensures I photograph all the must have images requested by the B&G
  • She helps me with my light tests
  • She has been known to step in as temporary babysitter or be on veil holding duty
  • Finally she keeps me company and more importantly keeps me hydrated throughout the day.

And this is why she is essential to the day.

The role of the wedding photographers assistant

Now one of the questions I am sometimes asked with prospective brides and grooms is if I work with a second shooter and my answer is that I have fine tuned my way of working at weddings and a trusty reliable assistant is all I need.

I believe that it is important to offer consistency in your images. A style might differ from mine but more importantly I find that one photographer is far less obtrusive than 2 floating around. It is easier to be discreet if you are alone and it is less interfering with guests. With regards to failing equipment and the advantage of another shooter with a spare camera, it is not needed for me as I have double/triple of everything.  I also supply in average a minimum of 600+ images so you’ll have plenty to go through 🙂 Finally it is cheaper for the bride and groom who do not incur any 2nd shooter fees.

I love my job and I choose my assistants carefully. I expect from them the same enthusiasm and professionalism as me.

It is your big day and I would be delighted to capture it.
