France Unplugged – A week involving Food, Family & Fun – Holiday amongst French relatives (UK & Destination Photographer)

Whilst I try my best to speak only French at home in the UK with the kiddos, I find it sometimes more difficult than I thought to maintain it at a constant pace. So I took the opportunity of the summer holidays, in between work assignments, to return to my home country for a week to visit my parents. It was ideal to mix visiting relatives whilst practising the lingo for the boys. Although both my parents live on the outskirts of Lille, one of the biggest cities in France and certainly a pretty & trendy one, I did not go to Lille even once on this occasion opting for local parks instead and generally hanging around at home. The focus was on quality family time and taking pleasure in simple cost-free activities. Ok so it wasn’t so cost free for my mother who endured a couple of trips to the supermarket to stock up on food for 2 growing boys nor for my dad who treated us for yet more food at a few restaurants but on the whole we took it pretty easy and did not do that much.

In fact, I had planned on going to Lille on my own to capture this vibrant city by day and by night but the thought of walking through very wet cobbled streets in windy weather did not appeal that much especially when there was raspberry gateau to feast on at my mums. I stayed put.

Daily early morning trip to the bakery to get the baguettes. Obligatory munch on the way back unavoidable.

One of the boys summer’s duties was to feed their uncle’s cats whilst he is away. This also means playing with the cousins toys and an opportunity to check out all the rooms and open the draws

Whilst the boys came back with a few French words I came back with a few French kilos – totally worth it!
